VISION THERAPY - Program of Care

Your Program of Care

Vision therapy (VT) is a term that describes a number of procedures or exercises. The procedures give feedback to tell if your eyes are working correctly or incorrectly. This feedback guides us to unlearn poor seeing habits and develop correct ones. Some say vision therapy is like physiotherapy or occupational therapy for the eyes. Others may use the term eye exercises or vision training. Vision therapy also works on the brain’s ability to control the eyes and to use the visual process including our ability to use our “mind’s eye”. Vision is intimately connected to the senses of balance, touch, and proprioception, thus during vision therapy the patient must learn to use these senses harmoniously. The term sensory integration is used to describe how we use these senses together. Moreover, control of our muscles (motor control) including fine motor, gross motor, speech, and eye movement must work together with all of the senses including vision.

Your program of care will be customized based on your unique visual needs. This can vary from glasses with prisms or special tints, syntonics, in office or home vision therapy programs.

Scheduling and booking

Vision therapy is done in office once a week. Each session consists of 45 minutes of therapy and 10-15 minutes of going over procedures and exercises for homework. Please make sure you bring your homework folder, all equipment, and all eyewear to every appointment. After 12-15 sessions of vision therapy has been completed, you will have a follow up appointment with the prescribing Optometrist. This progress check is to ensure that your vision therapy program is on the right track.

To book your vision therapy spot, please call the office and ask to speak to one of our vision therapists. We try our best to find a time that works for your schedule but due to high demand, evening and weekend spots are limited.

Home work and Compliance

During your weekly vision therapy session, you will be given exercises to be completed at home daily. Compliance of your home vision therapy exercises is critical to your treatment and progress. Weekly sessions alone are not sufficient, you must reinforce the skills through daily practice at home. Homework should take no longer than 15 minutes per day. The greater your home compliance, the faster you will be done vision therapy. When compliance is poor, patients are much slower to meet their goals and see improvement, often resulting in more sessions than originally estimated by the therapy team. Home vision therapy exercises will be given to the patient on a homework tracking chart, explained and reviewed with parents (if applicable) at the end of each vision therapy session. The best way to complete the homework is to add it into the family’s daily routine- It really makes all the difference!

Cancellation Policy

Thompson Optometry strives to provide exceptional care to our clients and their families. We aim to provide care in ways that best meet your needs and schedules. Missed clinic appointments and frequent cancellations do impact our ability to provide quality services. Thompson Optometry has implemented a cancellation policy which enables us to better utilize available appointments for our patient's needs.

If you must cancel a VT session, we require a minimum of 1 WEEKS NOTICE to allow that time slot to be filled. Available appointments are in high demand and your early cancellation notice will give another patient the opportunity to make use of your allotted time.

Unavoidable Circumstance

If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment due to unforeseen circumstance such as illness, inclement weather, or family emergencies, please call or email us at least 24 hours in advance.

No Show

Failure to provide notice on a Cancellation or Unavoidable Circumstance will result in a NO SHOW. You will be required to attend a make up session within two weeks of the missed appointment at the availability of the therapist OR you will be charged a $60 No Show fee. No-shows inconvenience patients who are in need of our services.

Recurring cancellations or no show (more than 3 appointments) will result in LOSS OF YOUR THERAPY TIME SLOT.

We respect our time as well as others so we have implemented these policies in order to make it efficient for all involved. YOU MUST SIGN A COPY OF THE CANCELLATION POLICY ON THE FIRST SESSION DATE.
